Hey!
This is something different from our usually scheduled programming because I need more… blank space this week.
Maybe it’s the weather, maybe there’s something more but this week I’m prioritizing rest. I hope you do too.
It’s raining in LA a handful of days a week lately and it makes it so much easier to spend more time on my couch.
All that being said… I’m taking some inspiration from another writer here on Substack, Haley Nahman - author of Maybe Baby, and I’ve got “7 Things I’ve Consumed This Week” to share with you. So here they are:
Cocaine Cowboys: a true crime documentary series about the fellas who (back in the 80s) really made the Miami drug trade what we know it to be today. I love a juicy true crime story that’s not about murder/break ins but they can be hard to come by. This one is SO fun to watch because they just keep getting away with it! It’s on Netflix and I’d highly recommend.
The Zone of Interest: an Oscar nominated movie I saw over the weekend. It’s based on the true story of a Nazi Officer who worked at Auschwitz and lived right next door with his family. Like right next door (they shared a garden wall with the camp). It’s quiet and powerful and unlike any holocaust movie I’ve seen. It was also incredibly moving considering all of the parallels of how people are talking about the genocide that’s happening in Palestine right now.
Pliny the Elder: I hosted a Valentine’s get together at my house over the weekend and a friend brought a bottle of Pliny the Elder they can’t drink because they’re allergic to wheat. It’s a limited edition hazy IPA beer that the brewing company makes ever so often. Apparently people line up at breweries, taprooms, bars, etc. when it’s released. I’m no conessouir but liked it a lot!
The Body Keeps the Score: a very well known psychology book about how trauma effects people both mentally and physically. I’m listening to the audiobook and boy oh boy is it good. I’m learning a lot and already think I’ll be listening to it again or maybe reading the physical copy.
Dawn by Yebba: I learned about Yebba (a musician) after hearing her on PJ Morton’s cover of How Deep is Your Love (one of my all-time favorite songs). Recently started listening to her debut album “Dawn” and I’m obsessed. Her vocals are so good and it’s such an easy listen. Really great for any time of day. Check it out.
This interesting YouTube video: called “The Insane Biology of The Giant Manta Ray.” If there’s one thing about me: I’m a sucker for an ocean documentary. Prior to this video I was unfamiliar with the Giant Manta Ray but man are they cool. Just a good watch.
Pad See Ew and the BEST brussel sprouts: from my favorite Thai place near my house. There’s just something special about wide noodles on a cold day. And those brussel sprouts… I’ve been plotting for a few years now about how to get the recipe from this restaurant because I can’t keep spending $10 on a side of brussel sprouts but I’m obsessed!
♥️ Do Some Good
Call for a Cease Fire
“With every passing day, hour, and minute, the Israeli military is making good on its promise to ‘open the gates of hell’ on the 2 million Palestinians trapped under Israeli siege in Gaza.
The loss of life over the last month has been staggering — almost too big to hold. But we must act now, because the Israeli government is plowing forward toward a fully genocidal attack on Palestinians in Gaza. We must demand a ceasefire now.”
Call your member of Congress now and ask them to join these strong anti-war voices calling for a ceasefire.

Calling will only take a few moments and it can make a difference.
